John Ernest Sarno Jr. (1923-2017) was a Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University and director of the Outpatient Department at the Rusk Institute. He coined the term “tension myositis syndrome” (TMS) for a psychosomatic condition causing pain, especially back pain. Sarno, a Kalamazoo College and Columbia University graduate, became renowned in the field, with a 2017 book describing him as the ‘rock star of the back world’.
